Step 3: Remove Coil Packs/Plug Wires

For COP: Unplug connector, pop the 10 mm bolt, twist the coil slightly clockwise and counter-clockwise to break the boot free, then lift straight up. For older wire sets, grasp the spark-plug boot—not the cable—and twist gently while pulling to avoid yanking the wire apart.

Step 4: Blow Out Debris

Use compressed air (or a shop vac in reverse) to remove grit from the plug well. A single grain of dirt stuck between the plug and cylinder threads can seize the spark plug forever.

Step 5: Loosen the Old Plug

  1. Snap the spark-plug socket onto the extension, insert until it seats with the plug’s hex.
  2. Break loose counter-clockwise, then spin out by hand. If the plug is stuck, work the ratchet 1/4-turn back and forth while spraying penetrating oil to prevent snapping it off.

Step 6: Inspect & Gap the New Plug

Check box-label for pre-set gaps; many iridium plugs are factory-gapped and must not be re-gapped. If gap needs adjusting, gently tap the ground strap on a wood block or widen with the gap tool—never pry the center electrode.

Step 7: Thread & Torque

  1. Coat the new plug threads with a whisper-thin film of nickel anti-seize—graphite lube can interfere with grounding.
  2. Install by hand first; if the plug binds, back it out and restart to crossthread protection.

Step 8: Reassemble the Ignition Path

  1. Coat the inside of each coil boot (or spark-plug wire boot) with a thin layer of dielectric grease—prevents future seizing.
  2. Press the coil/boot onto the plug until you feel it click home; reinstall 10 mm bolt and reconnect harness in the exact order labeled earlier.

Step 9: Reconnect Battery & Clear Codes

Hook up negative cable, turn key to ON (do not start) for 10 s to let ECU re-calibrate idle airflow. If the “check engine” light was lit, use a basic OBD-II scanner to clear pending misfire codes. A short test-drive should turn the light off if all cylinders fire correctly.
